How Phỏm is played
Phỏm, also called Tá Lả, is a Vietnamese rummy game. You draw, you discard, and you build melds.
- The deal. Four players and one 52-card deck. Each player is dealt nine cards and the dealer ten. The rest is the stock, face down. The dealer opens the game with a discard.
- Your turn. Draw the top card of the stock, or take the card the player before you has just discarded, if it completes a meld in your hand. Then discard one card.
- Melds. A meld (phỏm) is three or four cards of one rank, or three or more cards of one suit in a row. Aces are low, so A-2-3 is a run.
- The win. When a discard leaves every card in your hand in a meld, that is an ù, and you win the game at once.
- Otherwise, the count. When the stock runs out, everyone lays down their melds and adds up the cards left over, from 1 for an ace to 13 for a king. The fewest points wins. A player with no meld at all is móm, and finishes last.
A table can add house rules to this, such as laying off leftover cards onto other players’ melds (gửi).
